This year Mumbai hosted the 8th edition of the Girivihar International Bouldering Competition between the 23rd and 25th of January. India’s unique bouldering competition gathered over one hundred competitors in this event sponsored by Petzl & Allied Safety.
Girivihar is one of Indias oldest mountaineering clubs. Established in 1964 and aiming to promote the spirit of adventure and an appreciation of nature through outdoor pursuits such as trekking and hiking. This has expanded through the years into the areas of rock climbing and high altitude trekking in the Himalayan peaks.
Girivihar has been holding this competition for a number of years now and as you would expect from such an event, Girivihar concentrates heavily on bringing new blood to the climbing scene. With both natural and synthetic walls available the club offers introductions to climbing for male, female, young old and disabilities. Not many events can boast such an inclusive list. With participants from as far flung as Japan, Israel and France this competition was bound to have some regular faces from the climbing scene ensuring that this was an exciting event.
Some notable guests were Philippe Ribiere (France) Avi Fisher (Israel), Dror Avita (Israel), Martin Cauvel (France), Hwan Yang Nam (Korea), Mi Hye Kim (Korea), Elie Chevieux (Switzerland).
