This is an exciting time for the Scottish boulderer, Glasgow Climbing Centre has finally pulled back the curtain on the long awaited new bouldering walls and training room.
It’s awesome. I can’t wait until they get the mats down. There will be people tearing themselves apart on that new Beastmaker wall. “Beastmaker wall?” I hear you say. Yes, Beastmaker wall, some fingerboards weren’t good enough so we get a whole wall to deal with. The year pass is looking well worth the money now.
The Beastmaker wall sits across from what will be the designated training area. In here the campus gym and some circuit walls at varying degrees of angleatude! (I know it’s not a word, I just made it up.)
The rest of the new wall starts behind the spiral staircase. On the back of the staircase there is a small circuit that looks suitable for beginners, small kids or easy warm ups. Adjacent to stairs, the wall leads along the whole side of the room at various angles where, towards the centre point, the wall explodes out in an angled overhang. This then curves back in and moves along the adjacent wall that passes close to the pillar supports of the building, making it a tricky tight squeeze as you move over a feature of the wall. I like this little bit, I’ve climbed in many places where if you fall you will hit the wall behind you before the ground, it adds realism and makes sure you don’t cut loose too much or at least with more control. This circuit ends at the Beastmaker wall.
This is by no means the end of the refurb though, from what we hear the original bouldering area is going to be closed when the new one opens, the refurb will then carry on this wall. New paint, new routes and by the look of it a little bit of tinkering on the shape of the walls is what will be in store
for the original area.
It’s looking good and it’s bound to be absolutely mobbed with folk when it finally opens. Keep track of official opening dates and news by visiting the GCC website.
