If like me and millions of other folk around the world, you subscribe to that dreaded bane that is Facebook. With all the chops and changes on Facebook you may have noticed that you get adverts flashing down one side of the page, usually the right. One that constantly gets flashed on my page is Tough Mudder. I thought it was a movie or one of the annoying FB games. Wrong! It’s actually quite interesting, read on.
Hailed as “Probably the toughest event on the planet” Tough Mudder is a team based obstacle course mixed with a marathon. The people at Tough Mudder claim that marathons are for light weights and that this type of event is only good for training your knees. In fact they claim that this event will test every bit of mental and physical prowess you have. Getting more interested?
The Tough Mudder courses are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. Tough Mudder is centralised around being able to complete the course rather than coming 1st hence why you can join in teams and are actively encouraged to support and assist your fellow Mudders.
They encourage this camaraderie by getting Mudders to recite the Tough Mudder pledge:
- I understand Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge.
- I put team work and camaraderie before my course time.
- I do not whine – kids whine.
- I help my fellow Mudders compete the course.
- I overcome all fears.
Pretty hardcore and inspiring stuff and that’s just the pledge. The courses look nothing short of intimidating. Watching the promo videos Tough Mudders have to jump off elevated platforms into god knows what, swim, scramble and carry logs over various terrain and distances. Some of the most notable/insane things I noticed about the videos where:
- Mudders running through tracks surrounded by fire.
- Having to run through what looks like electric tape. Not the sticky stuff, bushels of dangling electrified tape used to keep horses in their enclosure!
- A monster truck pace car.
Now, most of these videos seemed to be shot in America where it’s warm and or at least sunny. Tough Mudder is coming to Scotland between the 14th & 15th of July, so that means if it’s a crappy summer Tough Mudder will more than likely be hell on earth.
Makes me want to sign up!
It’s not all about mad challenges though, Tough Mudder support various charities in the places the events run. In America it’s the Wounded Warrior Project who support injured servicemen and over here it’s the Help for Heroes who provide support for people injured in our armed services.
So, what do you think easy eh? Well before you think you’re all that, think of this it’s laps not a one off. You have to throw yourself off platforms, through holes, up ramps, swim, kick and crawl your broken ass round the course for as long as you can.
Still not scared? Sign up on the Tough Mudder website.
